According to the tales, the merfolk were the original inhabitants of the Dire Waters, with a history going back millennia, long before the founding of Faerndil. They built a sprawling city on the sea floor, with ornate buildings and grand temples. They were skilled artisans and craftsmen, creating beautiful works of art and jewelry using the pearls and shells found in the sea, and traded with the fae and elves from the Mystic Realms.
